Pakistan is increasing its deployment of troops along the border, the Indian military said on Saturday, as tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors soar, with Pakistan launching a military operation against India.

The Pakistani army has been observed moving its troops into forward areas, "indicating offensive intent to further escalate the situation," an Indian military spokesperson told a media briefing.

"Indian armed forces remain in a high state of operational readiness," she said. "Indian armed forces reiterate their commitment to non-escalation, provided it is reciprocated by the Pakistan military."

Earlier on Saturday, Pakistan said it launched a military operation against India, targeting multiple bases, including a missile storage site in northern India.

Pakistan's offensive came shortly after it said that India had fired missiles at three air bases earlier in the day, including one near the capital, Islamabad. Pakistani authorities said most of the missiles were intercepted by air defenses.
