Once known for crude, family-run e-waste workshops, China's southern town of Guiyu has become a key player in the country's circular economy and carbon neutrality efforts. With high pollution control costs, early workshops lacked proper equipment, filling the air with toxic fumes. In 2015, the local government put the Guiyu Circular Economy Industrial Park into operation to address the problem. Businesses moved in, recycling reusable parts and processing the rest for valuable materials. Today, the park is a fully automated recycling center, with effective systems in place to track and dismantle e-waste by type.
