In 1969, a 15-year-old Xi Jinping left for the countryside of Liangjiahe. His mother, Qi Xin, sewed him a needle kit embroidered with "Mother's Heart" – a symbol of her love and hopes. Early on she instilled in him values of loyalty and patriotism. Years later, as a leader, Xi would recall her teachings, saying: "Serve the people selflessly."
