On the eve of the Tibetan New Year, every household makes Gutu porridge, which is one of the Tibetan customs to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new. Gutu, a porridge traditionally containing nine ingredients including balls of dough, beef and turnip, is a feature of family lunar New Year celebrations in Xizang. But more than that, it's a means of divination. Each ingredient stands for a wish – rice grains for a kind heart, wool for patience. At Tenzin's home, while the pot bubbles, the children are taught to shape the little pieces of dough into symbols of good fortune.
