When Xizang was liberated, 17-year-old Dequ took the chance to escape from her overlord's manor and flee into the night toward a single ray of hope: the PLA soldiers stationed nearby. After evading recapture by her overlord and fending off wild dog attacks, she eventually found the garrison and safety. Her life has since improved dramatically and she was able to receive education, which led to a career as a state cadre.
