The hotter it gets, the harder they work: Railway safety in the heat

As a heat wave sweeps across northern China, Shanxi Province has issued an orange high-temperature alert for three consecutive days, with temperatures soaring above 37 degrees Celsius in many areas. In some places, railway tracks have reached scorching temperatures of up to 60 degrees Celsius. The hotter the weather, the harder the railway patrollers work. Extreme heat can cause the rail to expand and buckle, so patrollers must inspect the tracks during the hottest hours of the day.
