Second-seeded Wang Chuqin of China eased past Wong Chun-ting of China's Hong Kong in straight games to advance to the men's singles round of 16 at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Table Tennis Championships Finals in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.
The first game was close but Wang claimed it 12-10. The Chinese then handled a rally at game point in the second with great patience and took it 11-6 when Wong hit wide. The second seed maintained his aggressive style for the next two games, clinching them 11-5 and 11-7. He will next play Simon Gauzy, who eliminated China's Lin Gaoyuan 4-2 on the same day.
Also, earlier on Tuesday, Wang's compatriot Liang Jingkun defeated Marcus Freitas of Portugal 11-8, 11-2, 11-5, 16-14 to reach the last 16. The Chinese will take on Tom Jarvis of England next.
On the women's side, Wang Yidi secured an easy four-game win over Hana Goda of Egypt in the round of 32. She clinched the first game 11-7 before defeating the Egyptian teenager 12-10 in the second after she hit wide. Wang's speed proved difficult to deal with, and she claimed the next two games 11-4, 11-7 to make the round of 16. She will play either Andreea Dragoman of Romania or Prithika Pavade of France in the last 16.
China's Chen Xingtong also made it to the last 16 after she got past Izabela Lupulesku of Serbia 11-1, 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 14-12. She will play 19th-seeded Burna Takahashi of Brazil in the next round.
