Harvard professor: Trump's punishment of Harvard will backfire

01:48

The U.S. government has announced the suspension of Harvard University's eligibility to enroll international students. Ryan Enos, a professor of government at Harvard, said this represents a typical example of Trump administration's authoritarian governance, essentially a retaliatory maneuver aimed at winning a "political struggle." Enos said the value of foreign students to Harvard extends far beyond tuition fees – their exceptional intellectual contributions are deeply connected with the development of the U.S. economy and society. The decision, he noted, severs the long-accumulated ties of global intellectual resources that top universities like Harvard have built. Such short-sighted political suppression will ultimately backfire on the foundations of America's own development, he warned.
