China is ready to work with Niue to uphold the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and jointly build a fair, reasonable, cooperative and win-win global climate governance system, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with Niue's Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dalton Tagelagi, who is in Xiamen to attend the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, China-Niue relations have made significant progress, Wang said, noting that the two countries established a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2018, characterized by mutual respect and common development, which has become a model of equality and mutual benefit between large and small countries.

China's development of friendly and cooperative relations with Niue is open and transparent and does not target any third party, he said, adding that China appreciates Niue's adherence to the one-China principle and will, as always, support Niue in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions.

He called on China and Niue to strengthen cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, green development and climate change, encouraging more Chinese people to visit Niue.

Tagelagi said Niue is willing to seize the development opportunities brought by China and continue to strengthen cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, marine protection, cultural exchanges, tourism and telecommunications to promote each other's modernization process.

Niue will continue to promote the development of the South Pacific region in collaboration with China and safeguard a fair and rules-based global trading system in the spirit of mutual respect, Tagelagi said.
