US President Donald Trump's administration on Wednesday vowed to tighten visa policies for Chinese students, including revoking certain existing visas and imposing stricter screening measures for future applicants from China.
The announcement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio marked a show of defiance after China criticized his decision a day earlier to suspend visa appointments for students worldwide, at least temporarily.
The Trump administration has already sought to end permission for international students at Harvard University, which has rebuffed pressure from the president regarding student protests.
Chinese students have long been a significant demographic in US higher education, with 277,398 enrolled in the 2023-24 academic year, according to a report by the Institute of International Education. American universities, which rely heavily on revenue from international tuition, could face financial repercussions from the policy shift.
