Eighth-seeded Zheng Qinwen of China secured an easy win over Emiliana Arango of Colombia 6-2, 6-3 in the women's singles second round at the French Open at Roland Garros in Paris, France, on Wednesday, advancing to the round of 32 for the third time at the tournament.
Having beaten Arango 6-4, 6-4 in their first meeting four years ago, Zheng didn't have the best start in the match and was broken in the first game. However, she soon bounced back to clinch four straight games to lead 4-1 in the first set before claiming it 6-2.
Zheng and Arango broke each other five times in the first six games of the second set, but the 22-year-old Chinese held in the seventh for a 5-2 advantage in the set. Though Arango held in the next game to keep the competition alive, Zheng sealed the deal in the ninth to reach the last 32 for the second straight year.
"She [Arango] had great defense skills," Zheng said. "When I saw the short ball, I got to go to the net to finish the point whatever happened. I feel if we stayed in the baseline, she could put all the balls back, so it was a difficult match. I am really happy with my performance."
Zheng will face Victoria Mboko of Canada in the next round.
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus overcame a slow start to knock out Jil Teichmann of Switzerland 6-3, 6-1 in the second round. She began the first set trailing 3-1, but then took five straight games to clinch the set for a 1-0 lead in the match.
Sabalenka left no chance for the opponent in the second set with 17 winners. By contrast, Teichmann scored only two before losing the set in seven games.
"It doesn't matter what the scoreboard says, she really made me work for every point. I'm really happy with this win," Sabalenka said. "It's always a tough match against her, she is a very tricky opponent with great tennis."
The World No.1 will play Olga Danilovic of Serbia next.
