Harvard international student: When people start to self-silence, we are no longer living in democracy

00:45

Last week, the Trump administration suspended Harvard University's eligibility to enroll international students. Alfred Williamson, a British-Welsh Harvard student, said in an interview that he was completely shocked Trump had actually gone through with it. He believes that when people begin to self-censor, they start down a dangerously undemocratic path. For him, voicing his opinions is absolutely critical – only by doing so, he says, can we safeguard the foundational American values of freedom and rights. Currently, many international students at Harvard fear they may never be able to return to campus.
