Zhang Shuai of China and partner Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador beat South American duo Luisa Stefani of Brazil and Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina 6-3, 7-5 in the mixed doubles round of 16 at the French Open at Roland-Garros in Paris, France, on Saturday.
Zhang, 36, reached the mixed doubles last eight in Paris for the second straight season. She and Arevalo claimed the first set with ease 6-3. Although they faced more challenges in the second set, the cross-Pacific pair converted a key break in the 11th game, before holding serve to seal the deal 7-5.
Zhang and Arevalo will face Mexico's Giuliana Olmos and Britain's Lloyd Glasspool next.
Meanwhile, Jiang Xinyu of China and teammate Robert Galloway of the USA will go up against the Italian tandem of Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.
