A senior Iranian political official on Wednesday called on the United States to recognize Iran's genuine commitment to resolving differences through talks when commenting on the fifth round of indirect negotiations between the two sides.
In an exclusive interview with China Media Group, the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, emphasized that if Washington is genuinely concerned about the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program, it should welcome Iran's flexible and constructive approach to resolving disputes through talks instead of supporting Israel's ambitions to destroy Iran's peaceful nuclear industry.
The official underscored that Iran's engagement with the U.S. has been solely aimed at providing assurances about the peaceful nature of its nuclear program and achieving the effective lifting of sanctions.
He criticized the U.S. for maintaining a contradictory position: demanding a complete shutdown of Iran's nuclear industry while refusing to offer any practical or reliable proposals for sanctions relief.
He said the U.S.'s contradictory stance has fundamentally altered the nature of the issue and rendered the basis for dialogue and negotiations meaningless.
The official further stressed that Washington's persistent demands for Iran to halt uranium enrichment are a deliberate move to push the talks into a deadlock, as U.S. officials are fully aware that Iran will never accept such a condition under any circumstances.
He noted that uranium enrichment is not merely a technical or industrial issue but also a symbol of Iran's national independence and sovereignty.
"Defending our right to enrichment is, in fact, defending our national sovereignty and territorial integrity against any foreign threats or aggression," he said.
The official added that growing doubts among observers – those who believed from the outset that the U.S. push for talks was part of a broader psychological campaign – are now proving to be more accurate than ever.
On the issue of sanctions, the official said that the U.S. government appears to lack the necessary legal authority to effectively lift the complex layers of sanctions imposed on Iran.
It has caused prolonged delays in the negotiations, with U.S. representatives repeatedly avoiding the submission of a reasonable and practical draft proposal, he said.
