The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said Saturday that China has approved a number of export license applications for rare earth-related items, in light of rising global demand for medium and heavy rare earth elements driven by industries such as robotics and new energy vehicles.

Rare earth-related items have dual-use attributes for both military and civilian purposes, a spokesperson for the ministry said, adding that imposing export controls on such items is consistent with international practice.

The spokesperson emphasized that the controls are intended to better safeguard national security and interests, as well as to fulfill international non-proliferation obligations – demonstrating China's commitment to world peace and regional stability.

China will continue to strengthen the review process for compliant applications and is ready to enhance communication and dialogue on export controls with relevant countries to facilitate lawful trade, the spokesperson said.
