Li Xiaohui and Wang Ziying of China finished runners-up in the wheelchair women's doubles at the French Open after losing to Japan's Yui Kamiji and South Africa's Kgothatso Montjane 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 at Roland Garros in Paris, France, on Friday.
Li and Wang made history by winning China's first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January. They started strong in Paris to claim the first set 6-4, but Kamiji and Montjane fought back in the second and exploited the increasing mistakes by their opponents, taking the set 7-5 to tie the match.
The regular finalists at Roland Garros continued to dominate, winning the tie-breaker 10-7 and securing their second title in the French capital after winning it in 2023.
"It's known that failure is the mother of success," Wang said after the match. "So we also have room to improve and we will learn from the match and our opponents. Although we lost the final, we can gain experience."
"We have had many experiences on the way to the finals at the Australian Open and French Open. We will train hard and try to perform better in the upcoming competitions," Li added.
Li and Kamiji also faced each other in the women's singles semifinal. The Japanese won the battle 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4 after three sets. She will face Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands in the final.
