Mission impossible: accomplished!

Renowned Chinese high-altitude photographer Ma Chunlin has achieved a world first – capturing the ascent of Mount Qomolangma, also known as Mount Everest, from the north slope in a single, uninterrupted shot.

The challenge was immense: everything had to go exactly right – or wait another year. To complete this unprecedented feat, Ma had to work within the narrow climbing window of just a few weeks, trekking from the Everest Base Camp to the Advanced Base Camp at 6,500 meters. In the thin air and freezing cold, he camped under extreme conditions, waiting for the rare combination of clear skies, calm winds, and perfect alignment with the climbers' progress. The shoot had to begin at sunrise – timed down to the exact minute – and follow the climbing route precisely, without a single error in camera movement.

Five years ago, Ma created a short film that documented the full ascent of Qomolangma from the Chinese side – but in segments. Yet his unwavering dream of filming the entire journey in one take kept him going through years of effort and repeated setbacks.
