About 700 U.S. Marines have been activated to respond to the protests in Los Angeles, the second-largest city in the country, U.S. Northern Command confirmed on June 9.
Tensions have been rising since U.S. President Donald Trump activated the National Guard on June 7 after street protests erupted in response to immigration raids in Southern California.
The Los Angeles Police Department announced on June 8 that all of downtown Los Angeles had been declared an "unlawful assembly."
