Newsom slams LA immigration raids: Reputation of U.S. is at stake

01:02

The U.S. government recently mobilized the National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to respond to the protests in Los Angeles, the second-largest city in the country. Over 200 protesters clashed with the National Guard troops in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday during the latest demonstrations against immigration raids that swept across the U.S. state of California over the weekend. California Governor Gavin Newsom has sharply criticized the operations, emphasizing that 27 percent of Los Angeles' population are immigrants, with many families having worked hard in the U.S. for over a decade. He further noted that the vast majority of immigrants are law-abiding citizens who are contributors, not violent criminals, and should not be the target of aggressive policies. He stressed that the "one-size-fits-all" immigration policy not only threatens people's livelihoods and damages the nation's reputation but also risks becoming a prelude to intensified social conflict across the country.
