Israel's military said on Tuesday it had assassinated Ali Shadmani, who it identified as Iran's wartime chief of staff and said was one of the most senior military commanders.

"For the second time: The IDF has eliminated Iran's War-Time Chief of Staff, the regime's top military commander," the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement on social media.

Ali Shadmani was among those appointed by Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei several days ago, following the deaths of key security officials in Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.
