Wang Xinyu of China defeated Daria Kasatkina of Australia 6-3, 6-2 in a women's singles first round at the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Berlin Open on Tuesday.

Wang didn't get off to the best start against Kasatkina, as she was broken in the first game and soon fell behind 3-1. The World No. 49 battled back to claim five straight games, however, clinching the first set 6-3.

The 23-year-old continued to dominate in the second set, in which she broke Kasatkina twice. Although the recently-naturalized Aussie earned two break points in the eighth game, Wang turned her back both times and went on to close out the set, booking her place in the second round. She will face French Open champion Coco Gauff of the USA next.

Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina also reached the second round after beating the USA's Ashlyn Krueger 7-6, 6-3. Krueger replaced China's Zheng Qinwen, who withdrew from the tournament due to a neck injury.

Zheng rose to World No. 4 after advancing to the semifinals last week at Queen's Club. She hopes to recover in time to compete at Wimbledon, which gets underway on June 30.

Zheng has also confirmed plans to team up with World No. 6 Jack Draper of Britain for mixed doubles at the U.S. Open, which will begin on August 24.
