A Chinese envoy on Monday condemned U.S. military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities as "egregious and unprecedented."
Li Song, China's permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), made the remarks at an emergency meeting convened by the IAEA on the situation in Iran to discuss issues related to the U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Li said that the United States, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a state party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and a nuclear-weapon state, conducted a military strike against a non-nuclear-weapon state's facilities under IAEA safeguards.
"China strongly condemns such an act that is egregious and unprecedented in nature," Li said.
The U.S. act has seriously violated the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, and escalated tensions in the Middle East, he said, adding that China expresses serious concerns, and firmly opposes any violation of Iran's sovereignty and security and any armed attack on nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.
Negotiation and cooperation are the fundamental way to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue, and communication and dialogue are the correct path to achieve lasting peace, he stressed.
Li called on the international community, especially the U.S., to make efforts to cool down the situation and promote dialogue and negotiation.
He also urged all parties involved in the conflict, especially Israel, to cease fire as soon as possible, ensure the safety of civilians and prevent the situation from escalating further.
China supports the IAEA in performing its duties impartially and playing an active role in the political and diplomatic settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue, he added.
