Chen Yuanjiang of China won the men's 110-meter hurdles gold medal in 12.96 seconds at the Chinese National Junior Athletics Championships in Taizhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, on Tuesday. His performance not only broke his own personal best, but also broke the Asian junior record for hurdles of 99 centimeters.

Liu Guangheng of Zhejiang came in second and Peng Yu from Sichuan third.

Chen, in the fourth lane, led from the first hurdle and kept growing his advantage before securing a dominant win. He beat the previous record of Japan's Shunsuke Izumiya by 0.23 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Asian junior record of 13.12 seconds for standard hurdles of 106.7 centimeters still belongs to Liu Xiang of China.

Chen told reporters that he made it his aim to break the record two years ago, but hadn't told anyone because he wanted to say it out loud only when he finally did it.

In other events, Wei Liwei of Jiangsu won the women's 100m hurdles final in 13.94 seconds. Though Hebei's Zhang Jingyun tried to challenge her in the middle of the race, Wei held her off and Zhang finished second. Local athlete Jiang Yuxuan came in third.

In the women's 800m final, Li Yuan from Beijing secured the bronze for her fourth medal at the Championships after winning the 3,000m and 1,500m golds and earning the 5,000m silver.
