On June 23, the Xiaolangdi Reservoir in central China's Henan Province released a high volume of water and sediment downstream into the sea. For the past two decades, such measures have played an important role in managing floods and reducing silt buildup along the Yellow River, which has the heaviest sediment load in the world. The main riverbed in the lower reaches has deepened by an average of 3.1 meters.
