China beat France 18-16 in overtime at the FIBA Men's 3×3 World Cup in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals at the tournament for the first time.
After falling to Austria 21-17 in their first game earlier in the day, the Chinese squad needed to defeat France to claim the top spot in Pool C. They trailed for most of the contest, but Guo Hanyu and his teammates tied the score twice down the stretch.
France moved in front 16-15 in the closing seconds, but were then assessed two technical fouls, which led to a pair of free throws for China. Although Wu Xingrui missed the first attempt, Guo made the second to send the game into overtime.
The Chinese players pulled away in the untimed extra period, with Guo and Xiang Zhichao scoring to seal the 18-16 victory. China will face the winner of the play-in game between Australia and Spain in the last eight.
