The Chinese women's team lost 21-19 in overtime to host nation Mongolia at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup in Ulaanbaatar on Friday, missing out on the quarterfinals.

China, who finished third in Group A with a 2-2 record in the preliminary round, faced Mongolia, who finished runner-up in Group D, for a quarterfinal berth in the crossover.

China started strong by leveraging their height advantage, but Mongolia kept the score close. China had 6 more rebounds than Mongolia overall but found themselves in foul trouble by halftime.

With just over 20 seconds left in regulation, the score was tied at 17-17. Zhang Wanglai drove for a layup to put China ahead, but a defensive foul sent Mongolia to the line, where they sank both free throws to reclaim the lead.

In a pivotal moment, Zhang demonstrated veteran savvy by forcing a jump ball during a handoff. China regained possession, and Zhang charged to the rim for another basket to tie it at 19, forcing overtime.

But China then rushed with their defense. Mongolia capitalized and scored back-to-back points to seal the victory, eliminating China from title contention.
