A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Monday that China will conditionally resume imports of aquatic products from regions of Japan that meet China's regulatory requirements and standards.

Spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to a related query.

Mao said Japan, at the strong request of China and the international community, accepted international monitoring of the Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water discharge, as well as independent sampling and monitoring by China, and promised to ensure the continuous implementation of monitoring activities.

She said that based on this commitment, China held multiple rounds of consultations with Japan regarding the resumption of Japanese aquatic product exports to China. She added that Japan promised to take a series of credible and visible measures to ensure the quality and safety of its aquatic products for China and strengthen its regulatory framework.

In accordance with China's laws and regulations and international trade rules, and based on scientific evidence, including data collected from monitoring by all parties to date and prudent analysis and research, the relevant Chinese authorities released an announcement yesterday to conditionally resume aquatic product imports from some regions of Japan that meet China's regulation requirements and standards, she said.

The spokesperson said the relevant authorities will continue to step up regulation to ensure public food safety.

"Once any risks are identified, necessary import restrictions will be taken immediately in accordance with the law," she said.
