Belgium's Prime Minister Bart De Wever met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Brussels on Tuesday.

Belgium and China have a long history of exchanges, and friendly exchanges are active, playing a gateway role in EU-China cooperation, De Wever said during the meeting, adding that he has visited China many times and is impressed by China's development achievements.

Although Europe and China have different perspectives, in the face of the current complex geopolitics, the two sides should strengthen exchanges and enhance mutual trust, he added. Belgium firmly believes in multilateralism, supports Europe's strengthening of autonomy, and looks forward to positive results from the China-EU leaders' meeting, the prime minister noted.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that Belgium is a founding member of the European Union and the home of the EU headquarters, and plays a unique role in the European integration process and China-EU exchanges.

China appreciates the rational and pragmatic policy of the new Belgian government toward China, and is willing to carry forward traditional friendship with Belgium and promote the continued steady progress of the China-Belgium all-round friendly cooperative partnership, said Wang.

China adheres to high-quality development and high-level opening up, welcomes more Belgian companies to develop in China, and hopes that Belgium will also provide a fair, safe and predictable business environment for Chinese companies to invest in Belgium, Wang added.

Wang also noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, which is of great significance in carrying forward the past and ushering in the future.
