Fluminense reached the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals with a stunning 2–0 win over Inter Milan, as German Cano's early goal and a stoppage-time strike from Hercules toppled the UEFA Champions League runners-up in sweltering heat in Charlotte on Monday.
Brazil's Fluminense struck in the third minute, when Cano pounced on a deflected cross and headed in from close range, putting the ball through goalkeeper Yann Sommer's legs for a dream start.
The Italian side pushed for an equalizer after halftime, but were frustrated by a well-organized defense. Stefan de Vrij missed a close-range opportunity, goalkeeper Fabio denied Sebastiano Esposito with his feet, and Lautaro Martinez struck the post.
Substitute Hercules sealed the win for Fluminense three minutes into stoppage time, calmly slotting home from the edge of the box to send the South Americans into a last-eight clash with Al Hilal on Friday in Orlando.
Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal punched their ticket after stunning Manchester City in Orlando to pull off another shock. Marcos Leonardo scored twice, including the winner in the 112th minute. The team from Riyadh prevailed 4-3 in extra-time, with the first-half performance of goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proving pivotal.
Ahead of kickoff, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed concern about the lack of rest his side will get ahead of the new Premier League season, and said their involvement in the Club World Cup could "destroy" them.
They wrapped up the most recent English campaign on May 25, and opened their Club World Cup bid in Philadelphia a little over three weeks later, on June 18.
