A wildfire in a wilderness area of central California rapidly expanded on July 3 as dry, hot weather increased the fire risk. Evacuation orders and warnings were issued, and the fire was fueled by summer gusts, which typically pick up as the sun sets, according to the National Weather Service. Dozens of smaller wildfires were also burning across the state.
