In May 2024, the residents of Shixia Village in Beijing's Yanqing District received a letter from Xi Jinping. In it, the president thanked them for their efforts to protect the Great Wall and its heritage. Back in the 1980s, a group of volunteers from Shixia, upset at the crumbling state of the section of the Wall near where they lived, had decided to do something about it. In recent years, their duties have been taken over by official Guardians, also from the community, who are able to provide local knowledge to the professional restoration workers who are striving to preserve and promote the Great Wall and its unique heritage.
