3 injured from celebratory gunfire in Nashville, police say

Three people were injured in separate areas of downtown Nashville due to apparent gunfire from undetermined sources, local media WSMV4 reported, citing local police.

Police from the Metro Nashville Police Department said the injuries happened during or shortly after the fireworks display ended and may have been the result of a celebratory shooting in the air.

A 60-year-old man was injured in his foot, a 58-year-old woman felt a wound to her breast, and a 26-year-old woman felt something strike her face and cause a mark on the bridge of her nose and a swollen upper lip when getting into a ride share, according to WSMV4.

The three victims were among the estimated 365,000 people who attended Nashville's Let Freedom Sing celebration.

"The police department strongly cautions against celebratory gunfire, which can be inherently dangerous when projectiles, even if fired into the air, fall toward the ground in populated areas," police said in a statement.
