Spokesperson: China's measures to target EU-imported medical devices only

The reciprocal restrictive measures against the EU will apply only to medical devices imported from the EU in government procurement and the production of goods by European-funded enterprises within China will not be affected, a Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson said on Sunday.

The spokesperson made the remarks when responding to a question during a daily briefing, noting that China has no choice but to implement reciprocal restrictive measures against the European Union to safeguard its national interests and maintain a fair competition environment.

The European Commission introduced measures to restrict the participation of Chinese companies and products in its public procurement of medical devices on June 20, 2025, continuing to set up barriers for Chinese companies in the field of public procurement, the spokesperson said.

China has repeatedly expressed through bilateral dialogues that it is willing to properly handle differences with the EU through dialogue and consultation and bilateral government procurement arrangements, the spokesperson said. Unfortunately, the EU has ignored China's goodwill and sincerity and still insisted on taking restrictive measures and setting new protectionist barriers, the spokesperson added.
