Zhang Shuai of China and partner Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador defeated China's Jiang Xinyu and Britain's Luke Bambridge 7-6(6), 6-3 to advance to the mixed doubles quarterfinals at Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Sunday.

The No. 2 seeds had to battle through a tough first set, where both pairs exchanged breaks of serve before the set went into a tiebreak. At 6-6, Zhang and Arevalo held their nerve in the crucial moments, winning it 8-6 to take the first set.

In the second set, Zhang and Arevalo raised their level, particularly on first serves - posting a 71 percent first-serve accuracy rate and a dominant 79 percent first-serve win rate, both higher than their opponents. They broke serve twice without facing a single break point, sealing the set 6-3 to complete the victory.

They will next face American Desirae Krawczyk and British Neal Skupski for a berth in the semifinals.

However, in the women's doubles third round, Zhang and Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova fell short against Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei and Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 4-6, 0-6, failing to get past the round of 16.

Delayed by the rain, the first set was tightly contested, with Zhang showcasing some sharp net plays during Alexandrova's service games. After eight games, both pairs exchanged breaks of serve, and were level at 4-4. But in the ninth game, the No. 4 seeds secured another crucial break, then held serve to take the first set 6-4.

In the second set, the rain continued to disrupt the match, and the rhythm of Zhang and Alexandrova, as they struggled to regain composure. The No. 14 seeds were completely out of sync, ultimately falling 0-6 to bow out of the women's doubles competition.
