Ragnar Baldursson, an Icelandic scholar, recalls his first encounter with China in 1975, just before its major reform period. Arriving by train in Beijing after a journey from Guangzhou, he and a fellow student received a warm welcome despite some confusion about their arrival. Baldursson's initial vision of a "perfectly organized society" was soon tempered as he navigated the early uncertainties of his stay. Yet, amid this, he was immediately struck by the simple joy and abundant smiles of the Chinese people he met, leaving a lasting impression of happiness.
Reflecting on this period, Baldursson noted a fascinating interplay between the expected and the unexpected. While differences like the color of the sky and China's distinctive scents were apparent, he was equally surprised by the fundamental human connections he observed. This blend of discovering both differences and deep similarities during his initial days in China profoundly shaped Baldursson's perspective and marked the beginning of his enduring relationship with the country and its rich heritage.
