The Chinese mainland is firmly opposed to any official interaction between the U.S. and China's Taiwan region, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.
The mainland resolutely rejects Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te's so-called "transit" to the U.S. under any pretext or in any form, said Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.
He urged the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, handle the Taiwan question with utmost caution and refrain from sending any wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.
The one-China principle is a universal consensus in the international community and a basic norm in international relations, Chen said, adding that it is upheld and respected by the vast majority of countries around the world, representing the greater moral imperative, the will of the people and the prevailing global trend.
He expressed hopes that relevant Latin American and Caribbean countries will handle Taiwan-related matters prudently and join the broader framework of China-Latin America cooperation as soon as possible.
