A 54-pound rock known as NWA 16788 has become the most expensive meteorite ever sold at an auction, fetching $5.3 million at Sotheby's New York on July 16. The Martian meteorite, discovered in Niger's Sahara Desert in November 2023, is about 70 percent larger than any other known fragment from Mars and is believed to have traveled 140 million miles to Earth after an asteroid impact.
