Everyday heroes: A doctor, a persistent pioneer in ALS research

Fan Dongsheng is a prominent neurologist in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and one of the leading experts specializing in neurodegenerative disease in China. 

His dedication to ALS began during his master's research, where he first encountered patients battling the condition. "Back then, ALS patients received little attention or social support," Fan recalled. "But after forming deep connections with them, I couldn't walk away – even though treatment outcomes were often poor. When patients and families need help the most, I feel it's my duty to stand with them."

For over 20 years, Fan has devoted himself to ALS research, striving to discover better treatments, alleviate suffering and extend patients' lives – a mission he remains committed to today.
