'Red Mansions'-themed theatrical complex draws millions of visitors

The Unique Dream of Red Mansions in Langfang, north China's Hebei Province – a theatrical complex that brings the classic Chinese novel "A Dream of Red Mansions" to life through immersive and technologically advanced performances – has drawn millions of visitors since its opening two years ago.

Relying on 108 scenic gardens, the Unique Dream of Red Mansions, which took eight years to build, reinterprets the stories in "A Dream of Red Mansions" through 21 immersive performances with a total duration of more than 800 minutes.

Stepping into experience, technology and art have been perfectly integrated. In the "You Huan Wu" Theater, 36 partition doors slowly open. A 39.3-meter-long numerically controlled water curtain and rain and fog equipment create a hazy water screen, and 571 lamps and 130-decibel surround sound bring an astounding audio-visual experience, making the audience feel as if they were in the "Land of Illusion." The "Bed Theater" adopts the unique mirror film technology of China, turning beds into seats. Above 110 beds, the audience can feel the flowing dreams.  

In addition to technology, the theatrical complex's contemporary interpretation of "Red Mansions" is also unique. It does not focus on the love between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu of the novel, but tells the indissoluble bond between people and "A Dream of Red Mansions" over the past 300 years. The 21 immersive performances turn the audience from "onlookers" into "participants."

Since its opening in July 2023, it has received more than 2 million tourists, staged 21,000 plays, and attracted nearly 11 million viewers. 

In addition to wonderful performances, tourists can also taste delicious food in theme restaurants such as Granny Liu's Baozi Shop and Jinling Noodle Restaurant, and experience special activities such as costume changing and interacting with non-player characters.
