Diving duo add second gold for China at 2025 World University Games

Diving pair Ouyang Yu and Wang Weiying secured the second gold for China after winning the women's synchronized three-meter springboard final at the 2025 Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) Summer World University Games in Berlin, Germany, on Friday.

A total of 11 pairs competed for the title, with the Chinese team leading a German duo by 1.2 points after the first two rounds. In the third round, the Chinese pair made an untimely error, and only picked up 60.30 points, but remained on top of the standings.

The Chinese duo raised their performance in the fourth round, and extended their advantage to more than 15 points. In the final round, they wrapped things up with a competition-high 71.10 points to clinch the second gold for China at this year's Universiade. An American pair earned silver, while a German duo took bronze.

In the men's three-meter springboard final, China's Hu Yukang only picked up 72.15 points on his final dive, and came up short against Germany's Moritz Wesemann, who edged him out for the gold medal. Chinese compatriot Zhang Wen'ao finished seventh.

In swimming, China's Ai Yanhan and Liu Shuhan performed well in the women's 100-meter freestyle semifinals. The pair, who helped China earn silver in the 4×100m freestyle final on Thursday, maintained their momentum to finish in the fifth and seventh positions in the standings, with both advancing to the final.

In the men's 100m backstroke semifinals, Pieter Coetze of South Africa set a new World University Games record in a time of 52.18 seconds. Leah Shackley of the USA smashed another event record, on her way to clinching gold in the women's 200m backstroke final.

Individual neutral athlete Dmitrii Shvelidze beat Hungary's Soma Somody by a margin of 15-11 to come away with the men's epee individual gold medal in fencing. And Italy's Aurora Grandis defeated South Korea's Mo Byeoli by the same score to clinch the title in the women's foil final.
