The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit will be held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1. The announcement brings back vivid memories of my own time in that city in 2023, when I took part in the China International Press Communication Center program hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among the many cities that have captivated me, Tianjin stands out with its port, smart, emission-free, and unmanned operations.
What struck me most profoundly was the complete absence of human presence in the operational areas. No workers scurrying about, no forklifts manned by individuals, no visible activity that could lead to discarded cigarette butts or stray wastes. Human involvement is confined to a sophisticated control room, where operators monitor the seamless flow of operations, a silent symphony of data and algorithms.
Tianjin Port is more than just a logistical hub; It represents a tangible achievement in the global fight for a sustainable planet. By eliminating fossil fuel consumption and human-induced waste from its core operations, the port has set a new standard for what industrial infrastructure can and should be.
The Tianjin Smart Port is not just a triumph for China; it's a blueprint for the world. As a journalist from the Arab world, it is hoped that this remarkable experience and its underlying principles of smart, clean, and efficient operations will be embraced by Arab nations and countries worldwide. The time has come to harness the full potential of technology, not just for economic gains, but for the preservation of our shared planet and the well-being of future generations.
