Beijing Guoan defeated Qingdao West Coast in penalty shootout in the Chinese Football Association (FA) Cup quarterfinals in Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province, on Tuesday, advancing to the last four at the domestic tournament.

Guoan had been knocked out of the Chinese FA Cup in the quarterfinals in both 2024 and 2023. Meanwhile, this is West Coast's best record in club history at the tournament.

Guoan suffered a blow in the 21st minute when their starting striker had to be substituted by Fabio Abreu because of injury. Eight minutes later, Zhang Xizhe's cross flew past West Coast's goalkeeper Li Hao, but the ball hit the post. Neither side found the net in the first half.

Beijing opened the scoring first seven minutes into the second half by exploiting a defensive mistake made by the opponents. Wang Ziming intercepted a pass by Qingdao's defender He Longhai in front of the box. Wang then broke in and beat goalkeeper Li Hao for an open goal to put the visitors ahead 1-0.

Ten minutes later, Qingdao made Beijing pay for a sloppy defensive play as well. Goalkeeper Hou Sen deflected a low by Duan Liuyu from the left, but he failed to catch the ball, which went to Aziz Yabuku who scored an equalizer for the hosts. Neither side found the net again before the end of regular time.

Beijing scored first again during extra time. In the 115th minute, Michael Ngadeu's long pass reached Cao Yongjing inside the box. Cao dodged two defenders and then fired a powerful shot into the goal to give his side a 2-1 advantage.

Nonetheless, Qingdao leveled the score in two minutes. Ding Haifeng launched a cross from the left via a free kick and found Davidson for a header that dragged the game into a penalty shootout.

Qingdao went to the spot first, but Yabuku's shot was saved by Hou. Their second shooter Matheus Indio fired over the cross bar. By contrast, Beijing made all of their first four attempts to win the game and reach the final four against Yunnan Yukun.

Then three minutes into the second half, Tang launched an accurate long pass to find Maritu who chipped the ball over Chen's head for his second goal of the game and seal the 3-0 win for Yunnan. They will face Beijing on August 19.
