The Potala Palace is renowned for its unique wall construction. The white walls are coated with a mixture of lime and yak milk, and the red walls are made of dyed baimacao – bundles of phragmites reeds. The number of layers of reeds indicates the building's hierarchical status. Aristocratic manors were permitted three layers, while the Red Palace has four, underscoring its supreme status in Himalayan architectural tradition.
