Wipha causes severe flooding in central Vietnam

Wipha, the sixth typhoon so far this year, has caused severe flooding in central Vietnam, posing a high risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas, local daily newspaper Nhan Dan (People) reported on Wednesday.

One death and one injury due to flooding were reported in Nghe An province, where water levels in several residential areas reached depths of 1 to 2 meters, according to the report.

Wipha also triggered landslides at eight locations in Thanh Hoa province, displacing more than 20,000 cubic meters of earth and rock.

The storm also blew the roofs off seven houses, submerged over 8,000 hectares of rice fields, and caused widespread damage to agricultural and property across the province, the report added.

Wipha has weakened into a tropical depression and moved west-southwest as of early Wednesday.
