Wu Yibing of China defeated Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-1 in the men's singles first round at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, advancing to the second round at the tournament.
Both held in their first two serve games. Then in the sixth game, the French veteran served two straight double faults and Wu captured the chance to break him for a 4-2 lead. Monfils continued to commit unforced errors in the ninth game before Wu claimed the set 6-3.
The second set was more one-sided after it was tied 1-1. Wu clinched five straight games to seal the deal and grab his first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour win this season. He will face No. 10 seed Alexei Popyrin next.

In other action, Wu's compatriot Buyunchaokete beat David Goffin of Belgium 6-4, 7-5 in his first match at the tournament.
Buyunchaokete scored four consecutive points in the third game for a break and 2-1 advantage in the first set. Then he delivered a love game in the 10th to take the set 6-4.
The two each scored a break in the fifth and sixth games in the second set. Then Buyunchaokete added his third break in the 11th before holding to win the match. He will play seventh-seeded Alex de Minaur of Australia in the second round.
