China's National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) announced that the national basic medical insurance coverage rate has remained stable at approximately 95 percent throughout the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025). As of 2024, the total enrollment reached 1.327 billion people, the NHSA told a press conference on Thursday.

Authorities highlighted continuous improvements to the insurance system: medical aid subsidizes premiums for nearly 80 million individuals annually, while in-patient expense reimbursement rates under the plans remain around 80 percent for employees and 70 percent for residents. Long-term care insurance trials now cover nearly 190 million people.

The national pooled medical insurance fund reported a cumulative balance of 3.86 trillion yuan ($539.1 billion) by the end of 2024. A unified national drug catalog now lists 3,159 medicines covered by the plans.
