China launched the world's first full-chain AI forecasting model for space weather at a meteorological event of the 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on Saturday.
The model, named "FengYu", is the first of its kind covering the full chain of the solar wind, magnetosphere and ionosphere.
"It is a full-chain AI forecasting model and a pluggable architecture composed of large models of different space regions covering the solar wind, magnetosphere and ionosphere. It can be updated and plugged according to our future needs," said Wang Jingsong, director-general of the National Satellite Meteorological Center of the China Meteorological Administration which leads the research and development of the forecasting model.
Breaking through the technological bottlenecks of traditional numerical models, the "FengYu" model will help tackle the impacts of solar storms on global satellite communications, navigation, and critical infrastructure.
"We have realized the intelligent coupling of multi-region models across scales and circles for the first time in the world. The model was completely built upon the domestic AI platform. It will contribute to the future AI development in the country," Wang said.
