China will maintain close communication with all relevant parties, including Cambodia and Thailand, and continue to play a constructive role in helping consolidate the ceasefire consensus between the two countries, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Responding to a question concerning recent tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China stands ready to work in line with the wishes of both sides and support efforts that contribute to easing tensions, building trust and achieving reconciliation.

Guo applauded the international mediation efforts, particularly by ASEAN Chair Malaysia, which led to the meeting between Cambodian and Thai leaders on July 28 and the subsequent ceasefire agreement.

"The meeting marked an important step forward in de-escalating the situation. China appreciates and welcomes this outcome," he said.

Guo emphasized China's support for Malaysia in continuing to leverage its role as ASEAN Chair to advance political resolution efforts in accordance with ASEAN principles.

As a friend and close neighbor to both Cambodia and Thailand, China will continue to do its part to safeguard peace and stability in the region, the spokesperson added.
