Regional army commanders from Thailand and Cambodia met Tuesday morning in a border area to discuss the implementation of the ceasefire reached a day earlier, both sides confirmed.

Thai army spokesperson Winthai Suvaree said the commanders had agreed to uphold the ceasefire and freeze troop movements ahead of the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting scheduled for August 4. He noted that a ceasefire was already in place along the Thai-Cambodian border prior to the talks.

Cambodian Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said commanders from Cambodia's Military Region 5 and Thailand's Military Region 1 met for over 10 minutes.

"Both sides agreed to respect the ceasefire and halt troop increases to avoid confrontation and tension," she said, adding that they also agreed to resume communication and exchange information.

Cambodian and Thai troops exchanged fire over disputed border areas starting July 24. A ceasefire was reached on July 28.
