Meanwhile in Japan, residents sought higher ground after local authorities issued a tsunami alert following the earthquake in Russia. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued an alert for hazardous tsunami waves expected within the next three hours along parts of the coasts of Russia, Japan, Alaska, Hawaii and the West Coast.
